Your first dance is one of the most iconic moments of your wedding.
It’s that first quiet breath together before the party kicks off. No speeches. No distractions. Just the two of you, soaking it all in during your wedding song.
But with so many songs to choose from, picking the right one can feel overwhelming. Should it be a slow ballad? Something unexpected? A track that tells your love story?
Here’s how to break it down and find a song that feels like you.
1. Start with Your Story
Your relationship already has a soundtrack—you just have to find the wedding song that best reflects it. Think about key moments: your first date, road trips, concerts, or songs you both randomly sing in the kitchen. Even something quirky or unexpected can make for a meaningful pick if it resonates with your journey.
2. Choose Your Vibe
The right first dance song sets the tone—not just for your dance, but for what’s to come. Here are a few directions couples often take:
- Romantic & Timeless: Think Perfect by Ed Sheeran or At Last by Etta James. These never miss if you want heartfelt and elegant.
- Fun & Feel-Good: A track like You Make My Dreams by Hall & Oates instantly lights up the room.
- Modern & Emotive: Artists like Leon Bridges (Beyond) or Dermot Kennedy (Power Over Me) deliver fresh, emotional vibes.
- Country & Honest: If country’s your thing, try Better Together by Luke Combs or Spin You Around 1/24 by Morgan Wallen.
- Alternative & Unique: For the indie lovers, Sea of Love by Cat Power or Heroes by David Bowie offer mood and originality.
3. Understand the Flow of the First Dance
Here’s something I always tell my couples: give it a minute—literally. Aim to stay on the dancefloor with just the two of you for at least 1 to 1.5 minutes. This gives your photographer time to capture those golden shots—close-ups, twirls, the emotion, the connection.
After that, consider inviting others to join. It keeps the energy high and transitions naturally into party time without making you feel like you’re under a spotlight for too long.
4. Don’t Stress About Dance Skills
You don’t need to be Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. This isn’t Dancing with the Stars. What matters is that you feel present. A simple sway, a spin, a laugh—it’s all gold. If dancing makes you nervous, a short lesson or even a few practice sessions at home can ease the pressure.
5. Check the Lyrics
Some songs sound romantic but have surprising undertones (we’re looking at you, Every Breath You Take). Read through the lyrics and make sure they reflect your relationship and what you want to say in that moment.
6. Try It Out
Before locking it in, have a little trial dance at home. You’ll instantly feel if it’s “the one.” Pay attention to how the tempo flows and how long the song feels—it might seem different when you’re in the moment.
7. Nick’s Top 5 Favourite First Dance Songs
Over the years, I’ve seen hundreds of first dances—and had my own! Here are five tracks I absolutely love (and yes, one of them was our first dance song):
- “Come and Get Your Love” – Redbone (This was my first dance song!)
- “You Make My Dreams” – Hall & Oates
- “Your Song” – Elton John
- “Better Together” – Luke Combs
- “Spin You Around 1/24” – Morgan Wallen
Each of these has something special—fun, nostalgic, or downright romantic. They’re also crowd-friendly and perfect for transitioning into the dancefloor vibe.
