The Harsh Reality of Wedding DJ Bookings – Some Tips

Don’t Let This Happen to You

We all love a good deal, right? Supporting start-ups and embracing friendly competition is great—but when it comes to your wedding, especially wedding entertainment, there’s a fine line between value for money and taking a huge risk.

A Cautionary Tale: Megan’s Wedding DJ Nightmare

Let me tell you a story about Megan. She reached out to me in a panic earlier this year after being let down not once, but twice, by her choice of Wedding DJ.

Megan and I had a connection—my sister used to work with her a few years ago. She called me after her first DJ canceled. This DJ was a Uni student who had been placed on a work assignment and could no longer perform at her wedding. (I asked if she was refunded; she told me, “I think so.”)

Megan, understandably, looked for a cheaper option. She found another DJ who quoted her $650. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned. The DJ took the money, didn’t show up, and then offered to pay it back at $50 a week for 13 weeks! Megan was essentially giving him an interest-free loan.

Why You Need to Choose Your Wedding DJ Carefully

Thankfully, Megan received some compensation, but not every couple is as lucky. And that’s why I’m sharing this with you today.

I’m not here to scare you, but to help you make smart decisions when choosing your wedding DJ. The reality is, you don’t need qualifications to be a DJ, a musician, or an MC in many places. That means anyone can jump into the industry—and unfortunately, some people don’t have the experience or the integrity to back it up.

3 Key Filters for Choosing a Reliable Wedding DJ

So, how can you avoid getting caught in a scam like this? Here are 3 key filters I recommend:

  1. ABN Lookup: Every legitimate business should have an Australian Business Number (ABN). Always look them up to confirm they’re a registered business. You can check this at the Australian Government ABN Lookup.
  2. Public Liability Insurance: If they don’t have it, they’re not a professional—and they might not have the protection you need in case something goes wrong.
  3. Proof: Check their reviews on Google, Easy Weddings, ABIA, or Facebook. If you don’t see reviews, there’s likely a reason—they could have bad reviews that were hidden.

Healthy Skepticism: Additional Steps to Protect Yourself

Healthy skepticism is important, but there are more things you can do to protect yourself:

  1. Ask About Their Process: What’s their customer journey like? If they can’t clearly explain it, they probably don’t know what they’re doing.
  2. Payment Schedule: Be wary if they ask for full payment a year in advance. It’s a red flag that suggests they’re struggling with money or their finances.
  3. Experience & Expertise: Don’t be afraid to ask questions over the phone to gauge whether they really know their stuff.
  4. Trust Your Gut: If you feel uncomfortable after an interaction, listen to that feeling. It’s always better to walk away.
  5. Quick to Respond: If they take more than a week to respond (or longer during peak season), it’s a sign they might be unprofessional or overwhelmed.
